The Room Coffee & Cocktails
For the Love of Cocktails, Coffee and the Old City
The Room Coffee & Cocktails came about when an historical stone building located 100 metres away from the busy Lokmacı border checkpoint was renovated.
The weariness caused by season changes, neglect, insensible plastering of the stone walls and similar factors had caused the historical stone building to loose its original character over the years it had not been used therefore it needed urgent restoring.
The building was taken over by award winning High Architect and Specialist in Conservation of Historic Buildings Çise Tunççağ and her older sister. Even before the business concept of the building had been thought of, the first thing that needed to be done was to repair the collapsing roof in order to prevent further damage to the building by rain. The next step was to clear off all the plaster bring out the original stonewalls. All the gaps were refilled and the walls were restored with an air ventilating varnish.
After the building was taken under preservation, and the concept of the business was decided upon, architect and business partner, Çise Tunççağ, restored the only wall which was not made of stone with a running water feature and wall garden. With this, the warmth of nature and greenery combined with the peaceful sound of running water and spread a sense of peacefulness inside. Because the stone walls had a strong sense of character the materials chosen for the surfaces and flooring were simple, plain and minimal.
Ideas for a business started when the building was preserved and its original character came though. The importance of the location of the building emphasized its tourist potential. Therefore, a place that catered for all ages from different countries was decided upon. The outcome from this decision is a cocktail bar in coherence with the old city centre atmosphere and the well-known Gloria Jean’s Coffee brand coming together to serve cocktails and coffee.
Çise Tunççağ says, “We started this adventure with the idea of a cocktail bar and wanted to create a unique concept. We wanted our concept to be different from the other places in the city centre so we chose our glasses, presentation techniques, straws, decorative items and other materials carefully and enthusiastically.
Also, we aimed to serve cocktails written especially for us from abroad and serve them in a unique way at our cocktail bar, but by combining a well-known coffee brand such as Gloria Jean’s coffee with our concept, we were able to create a place that served good quality coffee and alcohol at the same time to tourists and locals of all ages.
The Room Coffee & Cocktails offers a choice of delicious sandwiches; desserts and snacks made by Gloria Jean’s Coffee and can supply guests with meals from neighbouring cafes. We are also planning to open a kitchen in the future and serve interesting and again unique aperitifs from our own personal menu.
